SKIN CONCERNS

Acne treatment in Cirencester

Acne is caused by blocked pores, bacteria and inflammation, and in adults it is usually driven by hormones rather than hygiene. At ALBA Skin & Beauty Clinic in Cirencester it is treated with prescribed skincare first, then LED light therapy to calm inflammation, with AlumierMD peels introduced once the skin has settled.

What is it

Acne happens when pores block with oil and dead skin, bacteria multiply inside them, and the surrounding tissue becomes inflamed. It ranges from occasional congestion to painful cystic lesions along the jaw and chin.

What causes it

In adults it is most often hormonal, which is why it clusters around the jaw, chin and neck and flares at predictable points in the month. Stress, certain medications and the wrong skincare all make it worse. It is very rarely caused by poor hygiene, and over-washing usually aggravates it.

What usually helps

Prescribed homecare comes first, because no course of treatments holds without it. LED light therapy calms the inflammation and is safe during a flare. Peels are introduced once things have settled rather than while the skin is angry. Where acne is severe or scarring, we will refer you to a dermatologist rather than treat it here.

What won’t help

Aggressive scrubs, frequent harsh exfoliation, or stacking multiple active products at once. These strip the barrier and reliably make acne worse, and undoing that damage usually takes six to eight weeks.

FAQs

Can you treat acne while it is flaring?

Yes. LED light therapy is safe during an active flare and helps calm inflammation. Peels and resurfacing treatments are held back until the skin has settled, because using them on inflamed skin tends to make things worse.

Why do I have acne in my thirties and forties?

Adult acne is usually hormonal, which is why it appears along the jaw, chin and neck and follows a monthly pattern. It is common, it is not caused by poor hygiene, and it responds well to the right prescribed skincare.

Do I need a consultation before acne treatment?

Yes. Acne is assessed in person at ALBA Skin & Beauty Clinic in Cirencester so we can see what type it is and rule out anything that needs a dermatologist. Prescription-strength products are prescribed face to face rather than sold over a counter.
